Is It Time for a Change?
Here’s How to Know
You ever wake up, look around, and think… Is this it?
Maybe your job feels like a slow death by slide deck.
Maybe your relationship isn’t bad, but it’s not great either.
Maybe you’ve outgrown the version of yourself you’ve been living in, and your soul is begging you to do something about it.
If you’ve been feeling stuck, restless, or just off, this is your sign: Change is calling. The question is—are you ready to pick up?
Let’s talk about how to know when it’s time for a shift and what the hell to do about it.
5 signs it’s time
1. You’re bored. Like, deep-in-your-bones bored.
You’re coasting. Going through the motions. Nothing excites you anymore—not your work, not your routines, not even your go-to iced chai order (which used to slap). When even the little things feel meh, it’s a sign you’re craving something more.
2. You daydream more about quitting than about succeeding.
You don’t fantasize about the next big promotion—you fantasize about running away to a cottage in the woods and raising goats. (And listen, if that’s your calling, I support it.) But if the idea of leaving lights you up more than the thought of staying? That’s your gut telling you it’s time to move.
3. You’re not growing. At all.
If you’re the smartest person in the room, the most competent person on the team, or the one holding everything together—but no one is pouring into you? That’s a problem. You deserve to be challenged. You deserve to expand.
4. Your values have shifted, but your life hasn’t caught up.
What mattered five years ago might not be what matters now. Maybe security used to be your top priority, but now you crave freedom. Maybe you used to want the corner office, but now you just want your damn peace back. If your reality doesn’t match your values anymore, you’re gonna feel the friction.
5. You keep saying, “Now’s not the right time.”
Oof. This one’s sneaky. You tell yourself you’ll make a move when you have more money, more time, more clarity. But guess what? That perfect moment? It’s not coming. Waiting for certainty is just another way fear keeps you stuck.
I get it. Because I’ve been there.
For years, I was the one helping other people get unstuck. As a professional educator, I spent decades coaching students, teachers, and journalism advisers through challenges big and small. I worked with incredible coaches of my own—my therapist, my best friend, the business coach I hired in 2022, the coach I hired in 2024, and the dozens of friends, mastermind cohorts, and mentors who supported me along the way. (Thanks, y’all!)
But when it came to my own next step? I kept thinking, "I’ll start my own coaching business... eventually." I had the experience. I knew I could do it. But I let that voice in my head tell me I needed to wait. Wait for more time. Wait for more certainty.
So… what now?
Step 1: Get Real with Yourself.
What do you actually want? Not what’s realistic, not what’s expected—but what would make you feel alive again?
Step 2: Give Yourself Permission to Explore.
No, you don’t have to quit your job or move to Costa Rica tomorrow. (Unless you want to. In which case, send me a postcard.) But you can start:
Talking to people who are doing what you want to do.
Taking a class or dipping your toe into something new.
Paying attention to what excites you—and what drains you.
Step 3: Don’t Do It Alone.
Here’s the truth: Change is hard. Fear will try to talk you out of it. That’s why having support makes all the difference.
If you’re feeling called to something bigger but unsure what’s next, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
